Anatomy of a MySpace page: Amanda Knox, suspect

Anyone who has clicked the link to Amanda Knox's MySpace page (which I included in my last post) will know that, as of about 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon, her profile was set to private.

Once again, Monica Guzman at the P.I.'s Big Blog got the scoop first, updating readers that both Knox's MySpace and Facebook profiles have disappeared from the public eye.

And once again, the comment section includes a rant from someone unfamiliar with the purpose of the Internet. Welcome to the spotlight, grammatically handicapped author of comment #64334:
The internet has become too public. None of what was seen online has any serious relation to the case. But innocent things like the youtube video and Myspace info are easily blown out of proportions by zealous media. The internet should be a place to share and be open. Instead it can badly misused. [As usual, emphasis has been added by the Seattle Crime Blogger - Ed.]
How foolish we reporters are, thinking that something somebody puts up on the Internet is - gasp! - public information. The Internet is "a place to share and be open." You're right: Amanda Knox was open, and the media is sharing. Shocking, I know.

And just for you, commenter, we've included images of what you can't find on MySpace today: Amanda Knox's profile page, exactly as it was when taken down yesterday. Check it out after the jump.
The profile picture.
Knox operates on MySpace under the alias "Foxy Knoxy." Note the date of her last login, as of early yesterday morning: 11/5/07. 3 days after Meredith Kercher's body was found:

Foxy Knoxy's Blurbs. She seems like the stereotypical female Seattle college student - likes drinking (both wine and coffee), spending time in the outdoors, practicing yoga...and reading Harry Potter:

Foxy Knoxy's Interests. Here we start to see just who Amanda Knox is. She appears to be a big fan of the Beatles and other classic rock, throwing in a little Outkast and Cake for good measure (much respect for the latter of these...the Seattle Crime Blogger is also partial to the fine sounds of John McCrea's Sacramento quintet).

Her favorite film list is divided between the childish (The Lion King, Shrek, Finding Nemo), the comedic (Spaceballs, Robin Hood: Men in Tights) and the subversive (Fight Club, American Beauty). Still, nothing overly exciting or revealing here...just another Seattle college student who spends too much time customizing their MySpace page:

Foxy Knoxy's Details. This section, not surprisingly, reveals the most information about Knox, and shows a couple inconsistencies between the person she claims to be and the murder suspect being portrayed by the media.
  • Status: Single (That's not what we've heard. Did Knox not want her parents or friends to know she was dating a 23-year-old Italian, Raffaele Sollecito, who has also been arrested in connection with Kercher's murder?)
  • Smoke/Drink: No/No (Really? Then how do you explain the love of "good wine," Knox's first interest listed under the "About me" page in Foxy Knoxy's Blurbs? Or this YouTube video, which has been making its way around the web like wildfire, and appears to show Knox under the influence of alcohol?)

Hey, really great coverage on this story. I've been very interested in it since I'm a UW alumni. The company that I work for has also been following the story as it develops. We actually jumped on it really early and we were able to grab a screen shot of a revealing short story that Amanda wrote and posted to her Myspace blog in 2006. It's by no means a confession but it does give a little insight into her inner thoughts. You can find the story here.

This is really a weak case. They found her DNA on a knife from her apartment. Relying on the lazy Italian justice system to process this case makes me so glad I live in the United States. The burden of proof is on the defandant, not the state, she has to prove she did not do this.

As for the Myspace stuff, maybe the multitude of young (and sometimes older) idiots of the world who disclose every aspect of their personal lives to people who can interpret it in an entirely different context will wise up and see the downside of putting it all out there on the web. Everything you do, say or show on the Internet becomes permanent record, and people worry that the government is spying on them?

As for Amanda Knox, I am sure that this is wrecking her family's finances and paralyzing them with worry. Based on the lack of real evidence, I believe she is totally innocent and I hope she is released soon.

Sleepless In Seattle - December 1, 2007 7:39 PM

Im not sure if it really 'is a weak case' as of today, December 1st...

I read, that while her parents were visiting her at prison [jail] they 'recorded' their phone conversations and stated:

"Amanda Knox admiited to her parents: ..'well, I really was at my place the night of the murder I can't lie and I am really sorry about Patrick...'...

Now, I dont know how 'reliable' that information is but they did have that on the news today....
Maybe she was implying her place to be 'the flat where her boyfriend lives, Raffele; he did say she was staying with?

All I can say is that since she told different versions of what happened the night Meredith was murdered, even if she were to be telling the truth NOW, it will be very difficult for the Authorities to sort out what is really TRUE and what is FABRICATED...

This is a horribly sad, sad story for all involved and mostly for Meredith's family; they no longer have their daughter to care for, to be there for...that is way too painful to comprehend.

FoolsGold - December 2, 2007 4:52 AM

Ofcourse once lawyers or parents become aware of the impending homicide charges and the media interest being generated in the case the MySpace pages are made inaccessible. What would one expect a lawyer to do under the circumstances? I would wonder if this "lack of real evidence" and "totally innocent" were not also lawyer-inspired! Damage-control and advocacy issues predominate in situations like this.

I just can't understand the massive personality change. I can't understand it at all. Just because she is a drugged-out slut doesn't mean she had to be so utterly unable to deal with the aftermath of her crime. She utterly failed the clean-up, leaving the task largely to her Italian boyfriend. She had successfully avoided any accusation of theft of her roommate's rent-money. Surely her culinary skills involved some exposure to tasks involving cleaning up afterwards. Surely her barrista experience taught her the need for thorough cleaning. Why is it that just because she is young and perhaps excessively devoted to one-night stands she goes all to pieces after she kills someone and can only make half-hearted efforts at concocting a would-be locked room mystery. She couldn't even get her story straight for the cops! Weird. Seattle Prep kids are supposed to be much smarter! UW honor-students are supposed to have more on the ball than that! What went wrong that she could not complete such simple tasks as getting rid of the blood splatter and the body? How is it she felt more desirous of buying lingerie than keeping control over the cell phones? Alot of people think that after one's first kill there is a desire for alcohol but its far more common to have an intense desire for sex instead. Couldn't she defer her needs for sexual gratification until she had cleaned up the crime scene and disposed of the incriminating evidence?

observer - December 2, 2007 7:13 AM

Her mother says she is "distraught" at her friend's death. The 1st photos of her talking to police do not show her looking even upset...her face is blank. The pictures next day show her and the boyfriend shopping for sexy lingerie and laughing about having wild sex later in the day. Perhaps this is her way of dealing with being distraught? Nothing she has said or shown gives the impression of the normal kind of shock and distress. All her comments and writings seem to focus on herself..."take me shopping, mom" "the other inmates think I'm hot," etc....and changing stories to put the blame on others. She specifically named Patrick Lumumba as the murderer; now she apologizes to the judge for blaming him. An apology???? What kind of person is this? To me, red alarm bells are ringing "sociopath!!!" Polite and smart on the surface, absolutely self-centred and conscienceless on the inside.

Fools Gold - December 7, 2007 6:11 PM

Sociopath? Perhaps, but why such an incompetent one? Usually they are rather skilled at doing what has to be done such as cleaning up a crime scene and exercising control over co-conspirators.

People seem to be focusing on her being somewhat of a slut and her interest in men who are low-lifes but there seems to be a lack of focus on why she was so utterly inept at murder. Sociopaths are usually good at that sort of thing.

I want to know more recent information....I seriously believe Amanda is innoccent. I think that her boyfriend killed Meredith...and her being the young American Teen she is had an obsession in that relationship....so did what she had to do to help him out....she didnt stop to think what was going to happen to her....poor girl I think she is totally innocent and now she is sitting behind bars for that murder. Now as far as Meredith: I am truly sad to hear of her death. I pray she will forever rest in peace may the Lord be with her and her family always....and as for the sick disgusted murderer
(which I belive was te Boyfriend of amanda knox)....May rot into the walls of his current surroundings and when he is parished may his soul suffer and always be burning in the depths of HELL

just seen yhe tonight programme shown itv england.her trial is tommorow and from what ive seen im sure she is inocent.good luck with trial

eric - September 21, 2008 2:33 AM

In England, the story is that when Fox arrived she was the local hot one that all the boys were after and getting all the attention that this obnvious narcissist craves. Meredith arrives, is better looking and more intelligent. The attention switches and the deficit disorder kicks in, despite Meredith's kindness towards her. Americans in Europe often come across as one dimentional and immature and she couldn't cope. A terrible hatred ensued and she killed Meredith. May she rot in hell.

medienmogul - October 10, 2008 5:52 PM

What's wrong with people today. Drinking wine and writing strange storys that also include some sex and violence makes you suspicious?
Well I guess then Stephen King is suspicious of having committed every unsolved crime in the US, hmmm?
Drinking? Guilty!
Writing? Guilty!
Killing? Well, sounds only logic, lol!
Oh, and she does not show the mourning that we are all used to from Hollywood Cinema and acts strange and inaproppriate - that sure makes her a murderer.

I'm not saying that she's not guilty - but the way the public and press makes her a sex crazed serial killer reminds me of the burning of witches in the medieval times.
