Why are Amanda Knox and Rudy Hermann Guede on Forza Nuova's posters?

Today a commenting reader linked us to this gallery at la Repubblica.it. According to our tipster, the poster pictured above is being plastered around Perugia.

The website seen on the poster is for an organization called Forza Nuova. According to Wikipedia, they are New Force, an "Italian nationalist and neo-fascist movement" that is strongly against immigration.

While I'd guess the words on this poster have something to do with immigration opposition, I'm interested to find out exactly what they say. I typed "Contro ogni droga/dio patria famiglia" into an online translator, and in English the message appears to read: Against every drug. God native land family.

I'm sure the real slogan is much more elegant. Anybody speak Italian who can decipher for us?

Against every drug. God, country and family.

Perhaps God, country and family is their primary slogan. I hope whoever committed this atrocious crime is caught and punished. It is regretable that such awful groups have used this unusual event to promote fascism and xenophobia.

"Dio Patria e Famiglia" or "God, Nation and Family", it was the GIOVANE ITALIA (Young Italy) slogan. This was a political movement that in 1831 was founded by Mazzini (not a fascist). An insurrectional party for the Italian unity.
It's a long story... But I think these words also nowadays suggest something similar to the american nationalism based on faith, family institution and values.
Nothing to do with xenophobia, originally. But I don't know what the neo-fascist want to say today.

Ciao, Roberta from Bologna

This is the translation of what they meant to say with that poster. The p.s. are mine.
Roberta

From Forza Nuova web site:
"From month till today the national voyeuristic press has triggered the attention to the case of the English student assassinated in Perugia the night of Halloween. There are all the ingredients in order to increase the sales: young girls and perverse, drug, blood, interracial sexuality. The objective of media is to maximize the profits increasing the sales after having stimulated the lower part of the popular curiosity. That is demonstrated by the hundreds of letters of admirers received by the black spirit of this vicissitude, the American Amanda Knox, she collects admiration and desire just because she's guilty; in a similar way happened to the ill-famed Erika from Novi Ligure (p.s.: an Italian girl who killed mother and brother). No one scares neither nobody notes the problem of the abyss in which, from too many years, today we are falling headfirst. The moral relativism, the hedonism and the nihilism of the values (than few years ago infected elites of degenerate intellectuals) have breached thanks to Mediaset-Costanzo-De Filippi (p.s.: the Italian trash TV) between the young and inexperienced group of population. The false passwords, sons of '68, that have imposed the theology of the politically correctness and slogans as "prohibited to prohibit!" have done the rest. The mass diffusion more and more directed to the smaller one of drugs, sexual promiscuity and pornography, the presence of multitudes of extra communitarian without history and scruples have returned, as a daily bread of chronicle, the bloody sacrifice of the more weak people of society: children, women, old persons. We want truly to save us? There's only a way: return clearly to the values of "GOD NATION and FAMILY"; goodbye to the sophistic distinctions between heavy or light drugs, between use and sale; hardest repression against anyone who use or diffuse drugs; immediate and forced repatriation of every foreigner who is not in Italy for job or useful reasons for our nation. To the deadly message coming from Perugia we answer with a mobilization of that upright component of the Italians that doesn't want to throw up the sponge."

Why are Amanda Knox and Rudy Hermann Guede on Forza Nuova's posters? I could answer you to this question simply saying that the tragical event occured in my city has a favourable market in the information industry. In fact since the murder of Meredith Kercher many journalists from all over world gathered in Perugia. Forza Nuova is a very small political faction, and I suppose they acted to spread their popularity. It is noteworthy that this promotional campaign has been held in a multiracial city such as Perugia where the media attention has increasingly growth due to this particular crime in wich there are involved mainly nonnative people.
"Dio patria famiglia" is an old fascist motto meaning a strong nationalism inspired by values like family, fatherland and religion. I could translate it "(in) God, Fatherland and family (we trust)". The slogan against drugs is intended to condemn the use of all drugs, pot as well as cocaine and heroin without distinctions. It is particulary significant the absence in the poster of the solely Italian accused of the murder: racism and xenophobia are steadily growing in Europe. Fortunately in Perugia they're a very little minority. The posters were soon removed, cause they had been illegally put up all over town.

LA reader - November 24, 2007 3:08 PM

Makes sense to me: Amanda and Rudy are the foreigners, as Patrick before them. The dark-skinned African and the whore from America, the nice British student (of perhaps mixed ethnicity).
This party appears to favor Italians who look like Italians.

What do you think, friends in Italy?
Racism and xenophobia also is alive and well in the U.S. (even with a President who is fluent in spanish language). People's brains and inner humanity cannot work as fast as we can "process" with travel and the Internet. Non-technical aspects of our cultures cannot keep up.

This crime has it all, eh? It is perhaps our first global techno-cultural-mass media murder with its recipe of the foreigners, the web and mystery-solving (we hope) technology, sex, blood, dark and light, innocence and experience---the good the bad and the ugly. This crime is big, too bad Seattle has a very crappy newspaper.

(This party is known for its racism from what I understand).

Thanks for the great translation, you are far superior to "google translate" and my rusty college Italian.

Grazie.
Interesting: posters removed already. Hope a few enterprising students grabbed a couple for Ebay -- the favorable market works there!
;)

Grazie.

Eh eh, dear Reader, here in Bologna there are a lot of over-sexed, ratty girls from every country, who swear they are chast and angelical!
The crime create opportunity for bashing foreigners everywere (it happened in America too), but you will be pleased to know that Forza Nuova it's the more anti-american organization in Italy.
They maintain the 9/11 conspiracy theory and think that whole evil comes from your country.
Ciao!

Roberta - November 25, 2007 2:03 AM

LA Reader, according to the press also Mr. Raffaele Sollecito indicate himself as a victim of racism.
"I'm prisoner because I'm a "terrone" (pejorative term that means southern italian), Sollecito says. In fact he cames from Puglia region.
I think there are deeper elements more then the superficial feeling of racism in this poster: the values recall 'cause they are collapsed, according to Forza Nuova, because of materialism and cosumerism of sex and values. They are against (in other words) the '60 "passwords": sex, drugs and rock'n'roll, that comes from anglo-saxon culture.
But there's not a stricly racism against the americans. In case, Forza Nuova is hostile to the ideology of multiculturalism claimed by italians left parties. Forza Nuova doesn't want Italy to became a big box for many people without a national identity.
It's difficult to explain to you 'cause your country is born thanks to different cultures.

(my shaky english... translation was not so great!) ;)

PERUGIA, Italy (CNN) -- Police investigating the killing of British student Meredith Kercher in Italy earlier this month have evidence that places two of the suspects at the crime scene, according to a prosecutor's report.

Meredith Kercher was found dead in her villa November 2 with a knife wound to her neck.

CNN has obtained a copy of the report that Perugia's chief prosecutor will present at a hearing Friday to decide if Amanda Knox, 20, Kercher's American roommate, and Knox's boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, 23, can continue to be held in custody.

In the document, Giuliano Mignini says Knox's DNA matched a blood stain found on the sink in the bathroom next to the victim's bedroom. The report also points to a footprint found by forensic police near to Kercher's body that it says belonged to Sollecito.

What do you think friends in Italy?

Well, xenophobia is spreading in Italy, you're right. This is due to a series of reasons:

a. Our judicial system has many 'holes' and offers a series of escape possibilities. At the moment we are totally unprepared to face waves of incoming illegal immigrants. It is not easy for example to send back home even an illegal immigrant (if he loses a couple of times his documents he can pretend to be someone else and stay). Even people with long criminal records very often are not sent to their country of origin. THIS REALLY EXASPERATE PEOPLE.

b. Our culture, our idea of nation is rooted deep down the romantic idea (1800 is when the most part of the European modern states were born) of 'one ethnos-one country' (ein Volk - ein Land, un popolo - una nazione). This means that a multiracial, multicultural nation is difficult to be accepted. That's why in Italy we believe in in the so-called 'integrazione', that pratically means that new-comers must become Italian-like, or must try to FIT IN, to be like us, unless they belong to a (similar) western country, or they are isolated cases (i.e. not building up big groups/colonies of people who want to stick to their culture of origin). Yes in puir minds we would like them (example) to eat Italian food, and their own food, say, only once a week, as an exception..

c. Unfortunately, as you can imagine, people coming on the infamous shabby ships you've all seen on tv are not the most educated. They have life standards and expectations who come into conflict with ours. this is problem.
Annnnd many of them, for lack of employment (because don't forget we have big unemployment problems over here), are hired by criminal organisations. I live in a small quite town and this year for the first time someone tried to steal my purse while I was in a pizzeria. I can tell you it was shocking.. this new wave of petty crime (that started 3-4 years ago) is something new to many towns (and quite annoying actually).

We are very scared that 'integrazione' won't work and that we'll have one day to face what is happening now to our 'cousins' the French, in whose 'banlieues' something went evidently out of hand, despite the integration policy.

I tried to depict you the way the avarage Italian feels at the moment, and I ask the other Italians here to correct me if I'm wrong. I really would like to read other contributions or comments from people from other countries.

Andrea, San Francisco, CA - December 3, 2007 4:35 PM

I can tell you as an American, I feel I have no country. This nation has just completely disintegrated in my eyes. While I have admiration for our nation's armed forces and vets, and honor for our history, I also feel as though America's reputation as the great evil bully in the world's theatre is well deserved. You can put any sort of feel good notions on any excuse for wars but the bottom line is power, money and the greed of both.

I tell people that ask me what nationality I am, that I am French Canadian, which is where my father is from. It's sad that I am ashamed to say I'm an American in International circles. Were it not for the friends I cherish here in the states, I would move to Europe in a heartbeat. I've always felt I am European at heart. So funny that the nation that claims to be an advocate of Freedom and Equality is still so desperately rife with racism, bigotry, and prejudice against sexual and religious orientations that do not fall neatly in line with traditional "family values". Yeah, I live in the most liberal part of the country, yet I dare not admit I am a bisexual Wiccan in the majority of circles I occupy. You should see the way people look when you say that. Scandal!

It's just so sad that everyone is so intent of making everyone to be clones of themselves instead of accepting the diversity of other cultures in their own space. Americans want to oppress and bend and mold the world to be just like the USA, a nation of stupid greedy fat bible thumping morons.

PETRARCH - December 9, 2007 11:22 PM

Europe should remain European..birds of a feather...it's not too complicated...Beauty is difficult and long to create easy and quick to destroy.Generosity should not be confused with promiscuity..."Cast not our pearls before swine"...VIVE FORZA NUOVA!!!

Tazia - December 18, 2007 1:21 AM

"Even people with long criminal records very often are not sent to their country of origin. THIS REALLY EXASPERATE PEOPLE."

White UoW students don't have long criminal records, they do have drug dealers, and crazy parties,

they don't go to Purdy or KCJ, if they did the guards wouldn't be allowed to touch them, ya know, the way the boy guards do.

On the other hand, if they go to Europe, they might find that the cops there simply don't know the rules.

That's where the Seattle-Perugia Sister City rich white cuddle club kicks in,

I doubt they'd be arranging city owned apartments in Perugia for a black girl's family.

I really don't think so.

They'd be trying to increase her bail to set a good example and writing to the UoW to kick her out.

Killing people in student lodgings may even turn out to be an infraction of the UoW rules.

If black students take to doing it.

I am not a internationally traveled person, but I am well educated. I personally am not interested in the sexual aspects of this case. Young people are that, they just are young and some of them do stupid things. However I do find it horrifying that a young woman in Italy that is a student, has her throat slit and dies a slow death. Just exactly what is talking so long for them to get to the bottom of this?

sofia - December 25, 2007 2:54 AM

Tazia, I didn't get what you are meaning. I don't understand what your post has to do with what I wrote. The sentence you are quoting at the beginning of your post refers typically to Albanian or Rumenian immigrants dealing with petty (and also organized) crime and prostitution, not to US students..
lodging for a black girl's family???? guards touching people??? I'm a bit lost

Tazia - February 28, 2008 11:02 PM

Be a bit lost. Throwing a few people over-board, selling kids into brothels, I'd sooner be in Hunts Point with a gun in my ear.

Don't petty crime me, it ain't petty if you're trying to find your 16 year old sister. I think I've found an Italian that doesn't exaggerate.

Saputo, won't be straightened out, he'll have to go to Southie and join a mick gang. He might also get to keep his money, unlike the wiseguys.

Way to go, jack a few trucks, take St Pat's off. Be upstanding in the community. A rubar poco si va in galera, a rubar tanto si fa cariera.
